We supplied hundreds of our Electronicon power capacitors to 3 of ASL shipyard’s offshore supply vessels (OSV) – ASL Harmony, ASL Symphony and ASL Synergy.
Owner: ASL Offshore & Marine Pte Ltd
Shipyard: ASL Shipyard
Vessel type: Offshore supply vessels (OSV)
ASL Harmony – LOA: 87.9m | Beam: 19m | Capacity: 4569 DWT
ASL Symphony – LOA: 87.9m | Beam: 21m | Capacity: 4700 DWT
ASL Synergy – LOA: 87.9m | Beam: 21m | Capacity: 4700 DWT
Our Electronicon capacitors are used as part of the vessel’s power supply system which is integral to keeping the vessels powered for their charter journey.
There are 2 properties unique to our Electronicon capacitors which prevents the catastrophic explosion or meltdown of a capacitor in the event of an electrical overload, making it a crucial fail-safe, safety aspect of our capacitors.
Overpressure break action mechanism (BAM™)
The BAM (“Break Action Mechanism”) is based on an attenuated spot at one or several of the connecting wires inside the capacitor. With rising pressure the case begins to expand, mainly by opening the folded crimp in the aluminium can and pushing the lid upwards. As a result, the prepared connecting wires are separated at the attenuated spot, and the current path is interrupted irreversibly. It has to be noted that this safety system can act properly only within the permitted limits of loads and overloads.
Self-healing dielectric
In the event of a dielectric breakdown the metal layers around the breakdown channel are evaporated by the temperature of the electric arc that forms between the electrodes. They are removed within a few microseconds and pushed apart by the pressure generated in the centre of the breakdown spot. An insulation area is formed which is reliably resistive and voltage proof for all operating requirements of the capacitor. The capacitor remains fully functional during and after the breakdown.
